Allowing Yourself Room to Grow

It's hard to be who you want to become when you're too attached to who you've always been.

How often do you catch yourself thinking something like, "I am too lazy' or "I am not a morning person" or "I'm a stubborn person"? These are self-identifying thoughts and they play an enormous role in how you see yourself. What you think and say carries weight and the thoughts you feed yourself are the ones that grow.

It is easy to hold on to your past and attach your identity to your past actions or experiences because it is all you know. Our lives are nothing more than an accumulation of past experiences but what happens when you want to make a change and facilitate self-growth? People assume, "This is who I am and I cannot change that". Thinking this way is erroneous because one's identity is fluid and endures constant changes throughout their lifetime. This mental wall is one of the many reasons change is so difficult. Change is uncomfortable. You want to change but you also want comfort, and settling for what you already know gives you comfort.

How you view yourself will directly impact how others view you. Positive or negative, Your self-talk has the power to impact the people close to you also. The way you carry and treat yourself sets an example and will likely impact the way your children view themselves as they grow.

When you change your self-talk to focus on how you want to grow as a human being, there is less and less room to hold on to your past self and the positive growth can finally start. Letting go of the person you always have been, clears room for the person you wish to become.

You may consider yourself "not a morning person" because you are always tired in the morning. It is safe to assume you don't go to sleep until late in the night and aren't getting enough sleep before you must unwillingly rise from bed to get to work for 7 AM. If you shift your thinking to "I am a person who gets a healthy 8 hours of sleep every night", and when you follow through as this person, you facilitate a healthy change to your lifestyle. The chances of feeling awful in the morning will likely diminish along with the "not a morning person" you currently see yourself as.

The power that you hold inside yourself to make positive changes in any area of your life is usually hidden behind a wall you built. Letting go of whom you don't want to be and deliberately reforming yourself into the person you strive to be, takes time but every small act of discipline gets you closer to your goal. It is a conscious effort every day to shed the old and introduce lasting qualities.

Taking steps into the uncertainty and leaving the negativity of your past self behind, allows you to stretch and bend how you see yourself and allows you to grow as a human being. Allow yourself to experiment and make mistakes along this journey as you become the person you wish to be.
