View Your Health As An Investment

Do you think of your weekly grocery bill as an expense or as an investment? How about your gym membership? What about that shiny new car you bought?

From the last three things we listed, which ones are an expense to you? All of them? None of them? Some of them? Many people view the food they eat to survive and the monthly gym membership to stay strong and healthy as expenses but justify the car as an investment.

We often hear "I would love to workout and eat healthier but it is so expensive" or "I don't have time to work out right now". Let's stop right there. Your health and wellness are not expenses and the time exists if you set your priorities straight. It comes down to how you choose to spend your money and what you perceive as important. Making smart investments towards better health will only improve your longevity and lead to a more fruitful life. While your shiny new car is useful and likely a necessity, it will sell for significantly less than you bought it for in a few years when you decide it no longer brings you joy. Spending money on material things usually leads to depreciation but our health is different. Investing time, energy, or money into our health will not cause it to depreciate.

That being said, you can spend all the money in the world and hire The Rock as your trainer but if you don't invest the time and effort to improve, time will go by and you'll find yourself with the same health markers and a lot less money. We suggest starting small and making easy changes like eating fruit and veggies for your afternoon snack instead of the bag of chips or earning your evening TV by going for a 30-minute walk, run, or weight training session. Once this becomes habitual, stack another goal on top and ensure it becomes a habit too.

Stack success in your favor. Make a plan that is so dead simple that you can't lose. A plan that is embarrassingly easy to crush daily. Once you master this, make small adjustments to keep moving forward. It may sound stupid but you will get hooked! The first 10 levels of any successful video game are easy for a reason! They feed you wins until you can't stop playing! You can do the same for yourself!

By conducting achievable actions that move you toward your goal, you will start to see changes. Making these small daily investments will compound over time and what was once seen as an obstacle will become a habit. Taking action to improve your health now will lay the foundation for healthy living later in life.
